Diary - June 24, 1967 - The Tin Angel Restaurant
Anne and I will camp out at Haines Falls this coming Monday and Tuesday, The site is North Lake and there are facilities for boating and fishing, rails for hiking, etc. Rutledge is coming to Ne York Tuesday evening but we will try and se him for two days next week.
Ernest Oberheimer came to see me at the Tin Angel last night. We spoke only briefly of his visit to India (at age 75) and of his five weeks in the Ashram. He will come again soon to have dinner, to chat and bring his nine page report on India.
Ive now been at the Tin Angel for seven months. The business is developing rapidly and my earning could easily reach 25,000 a year with one more year of building. Yet, this era seems to be drawing to a close; nothing definite as yet but there are sparks of intuition signaling a termination - perhaps beginning with our trip to India.
I laugh when I think of my past two years of intense experience in the restaurant business for one who has become so indifferent to food! the 'Tin Angel' is quite a place. Just to explain the argon used here would take hours. It is now the 'in' place of the Village. All the performers come to eat, chat and be seen here. the list is endless. Names that had no meaning to me previously in my classical music world are revered here. We regularly see such performers as The Blues Project, Dave van Ronk?,
Richie Havens, The Mothers of Invention ( I've come t know Frank Zappa quite well and he has often invited me to his concerts), Spanky and Our Gang, Dr. West Medicine Band and Junk Show, Jake Holmes, The Pickle Brothers, and, of course, Woody Allen, Neil Diamond, The Four Seasons and more. Luminaries come also, Otto Preminger, Shel Silverstein, Galmer Jacopeth and dozens of others as well but for the most part I leave them to themselves so the are not hounded by autograph seekers.
At times I will recognize Tom Poston or Marty Ingels and of course, Andy Warhol who will being a large entourage. I have succeeded in ridding the place of the most troubling kinds, the acid heads with blown minds, heavy LSD users who have almost completely lost control of their minds, addicts, drunkards, etc.
